3-Year Diploma After 10th: Does Italy Count It as 12 or 13 Years?
Written and fact-checked by Gaurav Dhamija, Founder & Director, International Multilingual Academy — 17+ years in study-abroad counselling, Faridabad.
Ten years of school plus a three-year diploma adds up to 13 years, but Italy does not simply count years. It asks what your qualification is and whether it gives access to university in India. Here is how Italian universities assess a diploma after Class 10, and what to check before you apply.
Quick answer: Ten years of school plus a three-year diploma is 13 years on paper, but Italian universities do not decide on the arithmetic alone. They ask for a secondary school qualification obtained after at least 12 years of schooling that gives access to a degree programme in the country that issued it. Whether your diploma after Class 10 is accepted as that qualification is decided by the university and the Italian authorities, and we could not find an official source that settles it for an Indian polytechnic diploma. Do not assume yes or no. Ask your chosen university and CIMEA in writing before you spend money. This is guidance, not a ruling on your case.
If you completed a three-year diploma after Class 10 and want a bachelor's degree at an Italian public university, you have probably been told two different things: that 10 plus 3 is 13 years, so you are fine, or that you only have 10 years of school, so you are not. Neither is a safe assumption. This guide explains how Italian universities actually look at the question.
What Does Italy Ask For?
Italian universities generally ask for a secondary school qualification obtained after at least 12 years of schooling, and the qualification must give access to a degree programme of a similar level in the country where you studied. Indian Class 12 is 12 years of schooling and is the usual qualifying document. Politecnico di Milano, for example, states a minimum of 12 or 13 years of schooling overall, and the University for Foreigners of Perugia lists a diploma obtained after 12 years of schooling as qualifying.
Why "10 Plus 3 Equals 13" Is Not the Whole Answer
A diploma after Class 10 is a technical qualification. In India it usually leads into employment or into the second year of an engineering bachelor's degree, not into a general first year. Italian authorities and universities look at what the certificate is, not only how many years it took. Whether your diploma counts as a valid secondary qualification for Italian admission is the question, and it can differ between universities and between programmes.
If You Are Treated as Having Fewer Than 12 Years of School
Some Italian universities set out what applicants with fewer than 12 years of schooling can do. The University for Foreigners of Perugia, for example, says:
- 11 years of schooling: you must submit academic certification showing you completed all the examinations required for the first year of university in your home country.
- 10 years of schooling: you must submit certification showing you completed all the examinations required for the first two years of university in your home country.
- Politecnico di Milano says it accepts the successful completion of a foundation course of at least one academic year to address shortfalls.
These are examples from two universities, not a rule that applies everywhere. If an Italian university decides your diploma counts as ten years of schooling for admission purposes, a rule like this could apply to you, which would mean further study before you can apply. If it accepts the diploma as a qualifying secondary certificate, it would not. Only the university can tell you which applies to your certificate.

- Read the international admission page of each university you are considering, especially its section on foreign qualifications and years of schooling.
- Write to the university's international office with scans of your Class 10 and diploma certificates and ask: "Is my qualification accepted for admission to this bachelor's programme, and if not, what additional study do you require?" Keep the reply.
- Ask CIMEA, Italy's centre for the recognition of foreign qualifications, for a statement of comparability for your diploma, or ask the Italian consulate which document it requires. Indian applicants are generally asked for a comparability statement or a Declaration of Value.
- Check the programme's own requirements, such as entrance tests and language certificates. A qualification can be accepted and the programme can still be competitive.
- Decide only after you have the written answer. Do not pay an agent for admission based on a verbal assurance.
Your Realistic Options
- Your diploma is accepted: apply for the 2027/28 intake once Universitaly opens. Dates are not officially announced yet, so check Universitaly and your university.
- Your diploma is not accepted for a bachelor's degree: ask about the fewer-than-12-years route at your chosen university, which may need further study such as a foundation course or university years in India.
- You want to finish a bachelor's degree in India first, for example by joining the second year of a B.Tech or B.Sc programme, and then apply for a master's degree in Italy later.
- You want to compare other countries whose rules fit your qualification better.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming 10 plus 3 equals 13 and that 13 is enough.
- Assuming the diploma is rejected without asking the university.
- Applying to many universities before getting one written answer on your qualification.
- Paying an agent for guaranteed admission. No one can guarantee a seat at an Italian public university.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 3-year diploma after 10th equal to 12 or 13 years for Italy?
It adds up to 13 years in total, but Italy does not decide by arithmetic alone. Italian universities ask for a qualification after at least 12 years of schooling that gives access to a degree programme in India, and whether a diploma after Class 10 qualifies is decided by the university and the Italian authorities.
Can I apply to an Italian public university with a polytechnic diploma?
It depends on whether the university accepts your diploma as a qualifying secondary certificate. We could not find an official source that settles this for Indian polytechnic diplomas, so write to the university and CIMEA before applying.
What if Italy treats my qualification as fewer than 12 years of schooling?
Some universities ask for university examinations from your home country to make up the difference: one year of examinations for 11 years of schooling, and two years for 10 years, as one university's page states. Others accept a foundation course of at least one year. Rules differ by university.
What is CIMEA?
CIMEA is Italy's centre for information on academic mobility and equivalence, which evaluates foreign qualifications. Indian applicants are generally asked for a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value.
Is Indian Class 12 enough for Italy?
A passed Class 12, which is 12 years of schooling, is the usual qualifying document. Individual programmes can add test and language requirements.
When can I apply for the 2027/28 intake?
Not officially announced yet. Check Universitaly and your chosen university, usually from early 2027.
Can I do a bachelor's in India first and then study in Italy?
Yes. Completing or continuing a bachelor's degree in India, for example by joining the second year of an engineering degree after a diploma, and then applying for a master's in Italy is one route. Check each programme's admission rules.
