Class 12 in 2027: Can You Apply to an Italian Public University Now (October 2026)?
Written and fact-checked by Gaurav Dhamija, Founder & Director, International Multilingual Academy — 17+ years in study-abroad counselling, Faridabad.
You are in Class 12 with your board exams in 2027. Can you apply to an Italian public university in October 2026? The short answer is not for this year's intake. Here is which intake to aim for, what Italy asks of Indian Class 12 students, and what to do now.
Quick answer: No, not for the intake that is open now. Pre-enrolment for the 2026/27 academic year is already closing or closed at many Italian public universities (the University of Pisa's deadline was 30 September 2026), and Italian universities generally ask for a completed secondary school qualification with at least 12 years of schooling. If your Class 12 board exams are in 2027, your realistic target is the 2027/28 academic year, which starts in autumn 2027. Not officially announced yet for 2027/28: check Universitaly and your chosen university for the dates. Use the months before then to prepare, not to rush an application.
This is one of the most common questions from Class 12 students and their parents, and it has a clear answer once you separate two things: which academic year you are aiming for, and what you must have completed before you apply.
Which Intake Can You Realistically Aim For?
Italian academic years start in the autumn. The 2026/27 year starts in autumn 2026, so its applications are already closed or nearly closed. For example, the University of Pisa's deadline for pre-enrolment on Universitaly, the Italian government's portal for international applicants, was 30 September 2026. Other universities set their own dates, so check each one, but you should not plan on 2026/27.
Your Class 12 results will come out in 2027, so the intake that fits you is 2027/28, starting in autumn 2027. Dates for that cycle have not been officially announced. Pre-enrolment on Universitaly and each university's own deadlines are published by the Italian authorities and the universities, and they differ by university and by programme. Watch Universitaly and your shortlist's websites from early 2027.
What Does Italy Ask of an Indian Class 12 Student?
- A completed secondary school qualification. Italian universities ask for a high school qualification obtained after at least 12 years of schooling. Indian Class 12 is 12 years, so a passed Class 12 from a recognised board is the usual qualifying document.
- Your results, not only your enrolment. Because the qualification must be completed, a student who is still waiting for Class 12 results generally cannot be fully admitted. Some universities let you start the process earlier, so ask each one what they accept and when. Do not assume it.
- Proof of your qualification's standing. Indian consulates ask for a comparability or verification document for your qualification, such as one from CIMEA, or a Declaration of Value, to be uploaded with your application. Confirm which your university and the consulate want.
- A language certificate. Italian universities usually ask for B2 in the language of the course, whether English or Italian. Check each programme.
These points come from university pages and from reports about the consulate's checklist for 2026/27. Requirements are set each year, so confirm them for 2027/28 before you act.

Our counsellors will assess your profile and guide you to the right path — no commitment needed.
- Focus on your board exams. Your results decide which universities and programmes you can apply to.
- Decide the language of study. English-taught programmes need an English certificate such as IELTS, at the level each programme sets. Italian-taught programmes need Italian at the required level, and learning Italian takes time, so start early if that is your plan.
- Shortlist public universities and programmes. Read their international admission pages for 2026/27 to see how they work, because 2027/28 pages will usually follow the same pattern with new dates.
- Check entrance tests. Some programmes, medicine in particular, use an entrance test such as the IMAT. Dates and rules for 2027/28 must be confirmed.
- Plan the money. Italy asks for proof of financial means for the study visa. For the 2026/27 cycle, reports put the minimum at about €10,180, but confirm the 2027/28 figure with the consulate.
- Watch for announcements from early 2027 and be ready to apply as soon as Universitaly opens.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying with a promise to submit results later without checking that the university accepts it.
- Paying an agent for guaranteed admission. No one can guarantee a seat at an Italian public university.
- Leaving Italian or English language preparation to the last minute.
- Using last year's deadlines for 2027/28.
