IMLEX Master 2027: Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (Full Guide)

Most guides to this programme stop at the brochure description. This one goes further, because IMLEX publishes something unusual: the exact scoring rubric its admissions board uses to rank applicants. If you know that grades are worth 30 points and your motivation letter is worth 20, you can prepare very differently. Every figure below comes from the consortium's own pages, and where sources disagree, the conflict is flagged rather than smoothed over.

What Is IMLEX?

IMLEX stands for Imaging and Light in Extended Reality. It sits at the intersection of three fields that are usually taught separately: computational imaging (how cameras and algorithms capture and reconstruct the world), lighting science (how light physically behaves and how humans perceive it), and extended reality (VR, AR and mixed reality systems). The premise is that building convincing XR requires all three at once, and very few Master's programmes teach them together.

It is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, or EMJM, which is the European Union's flagship postgraduate mobility scheme. It was also one of the first Erasmus Mundus partnerships to include a Japanese university as a full degree-awarding partner rather than an associate, which is why the second year is spent in Japan.

The Degree You Actually Receive

This is the detail that most summaries get wrong, and it is genuinely unusual. You do not graduate with one degree. You graduate with two separate awards:

• A joint Master of Science degree issued together by the University of Eastern Finland, Université Jean Monnet and KU Leuven.
• A national Master of Engineering degree from Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan.

For anyone planning to work or pursue a doctorate in Japan, that second, nationally recognised Japanese engineering degree carries real practical weight that a European joint degree alone would not.

Where You Study: The Mobility Route

IMLEX restructured its mobility from the 2025 intake onwards. Older guides still describe a system where students chose between two tracks in semester two. That is no longer how it works. Every student now follows the same route:

Note the fourth semester: the thesis can be done at a company rather than a university. For students who want an industry route rather than a research one, that flexibility matters, and it is worth raising in your motivation letter if it is genuinely your plan.

The 2027 Application Timeline

Applications are submitted through Studyinfo, the Finnish national admissions service at opintopolku.fi, because the University of Eastern Finland coordinates the consortium. You do not apply to each university separately.

What It Costs and What the Scholarship Pays

IMLEX charges no application fee at all, which is unusual and removes the cost of simply trying. Beyond that, what you pay depends entirely on whether you win an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

The consortium has confirmed that the 2027 round offers full Erasmus Mundus scholarships open to all nationalities, and that self-funded enrolment is also possible. It also states that partial or full waivers of the consortium fee may be granted to the strongest applicants, which gives self-funded candidates a second route to affordability.

The consortium does not publish how many of the 25 places carry a scholarship. Anyone quoting you a specific number is guessing. If that figure matters to your decision, ask the consortium directly rather than relying on third-party sites.

Budget accordingly. Moving between Finland, France, Belgium and Japan involves four relocations, four sets of visa or residence-permit paperwork, and at least one intercontinental flight, all of which come out of that monthly allowance rather than from a separate pot.

Only 25 Places, and the Scoring Is Public

This is the part that makes IMLEX genuinely different from most programmes. The consortium states plainly that the best 25 applicants are accepted and the rest are rejected, and it publishes the points system used to rank them. Selection happens in two rounds.

Read that table as a preparation plan. Grades carry the single largest weight at 30 points, and they come with a hard threshold: score below 10 there and you are out regardless of everything else. But the three criteria you can still influence after your degree is finished, namely motivation letter, relevant experience and references, are worth 50 points between them. That is half the total, and it is where a realistic applicant with good but not exceptional grades actually competes.

The prior international mobility element inside that 20-point experience score is worth noting. A summer school abroad, a semester exchange, a remote research collaboration with a foreign lab, or a documented internship with an international team all count as evidence. If you have any of these, make them explicit rather than leaving them buried in your CV.

Two further rules apply. If applicants tie on points, the board may take the gender balance of the cohort into account, and otherwise the applicant with the higher academic excellence score is placed first. The admissions board may also invite top applicants to an online interview to verify their skills and motivation, so prepare to discuss your letter out loud.

Who Can Apply

• A Bachelor's degree corresponding to at least three years of full-time study, from an internationally recognised university. A standard three-year Indian Bachelor's degree meets this duration requirement.
• A background in Information Technology, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Electronic Engineering, Photonics or a closely related field.
• The coursework the board specifically looks for includes mathematics, physics, data structures and algorithms, programming, imaging, XR, computer graphics, electronics and lighting.
• No minimum GPA or percentage is published. Your grades are scored comparatively against the rest of the applicant pool rather than against a fixed cut-off.
• You may apply while still in your final year. If you graduate after the deadline, you can submit your degree documents later, provided they arrive by the end of July.

The consortium also notes that skills gained from work experience or other studies can be taken into account, and are evaluated individually for each candidate. If you switched fields or took a non-linear route, that is explicitly not disqualifying, but you will need to argue the relevance yourself.

English Language Requirements, and the TOEFL Change

Tests must have been taken on or after 2 December 2024 and remain valid for two years, so your certificate has to be in effect during the application period. Results must be verifiable through the test provider's own online verification service, which means you should arrange for scores to be sent electronically rather than relying on a scanned copy.

You may be exempt from testing altogether if you completed a Bachelor's, Master's or higher degree taught in English, with at least 50 per cent of the degree completed in English, at an institution in the EU or EEA, or in Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria, the United Kingdom or the United States. Note that an English-medium degree from an Indian university does not appear on that list, so most Indian applicants will need a test score.

Documents You Need

• The completed application form, submitted through Studyinfo.
• Your Bachelor's degree certificate, with an English translation.
• Your official academic transcript, with an English translation.
• A valid English language certificate, unless you qualify for an exemption.
• Two letters of recommendation.
• A motivation letter of no more than one A4 page, answering four set questions.
• A chronological CV with no unexplained gaps longer than 12 months across the last five years.
• A copy of your passport or identity document.
• A motivation video of no more than two minutes and no larger than 1 GB, required at the shortlist stage.

The CV rule deserves attention because it is stricter than most. Gaps longer than 12 months in the past five years need explaining. A year spent preparing for competitive exams, caring for family, or job-hunting is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be stated rather than left as a silent hole in the timeline.

The Motivation Letter's Four Questions

The motivation letter is worth 20 points and is capped at a single A4 page, so roughly 500 words to cover four distinct questions. The consortium asks you to address:

• How your present situation and background relate to the IMLEX curriculum and its prerequisites.
• Which IMLEX courses or semesters you find most interesting, and why.
• Your ideas for applied research connected to IMLEX academic content.
• Your professional development plan.

The second and third questions are where most applications fall flat. Naming a specific course, a specific laboratory such as the KU Leuven Light & Lighting Laboratory, or a specific research theme at Toyohashi demonstrates that you read the curriculum. Generic enthusiasm for extended reality does not. Given 500 words for four questions, roughly 125 words each, there is no room for a scene-setting introduction about your childhood fascination with technology.

Unusually, the consortium explicitly permits the use of generative AI when preparing the motivation letter. That permission cuts both ways: if everyone can produce fluent prose, fluency stops being a differentiator and specific, verifiable content becomes the only thing that separates applications.

The Motivation Video

The video is worth 10 points and is evaluated in the second round, which means it is requested from shortlisted candidates rather than submitted by everyone up front. It runs to a maximum of two minutes and asks you to address two questions: your interest in extended reality, and how your abilities support your success in the programme. Accepted formats include mp4, webm, quicktime, mpeg and several others, with a 1 GB ceiling.

Two minutes is short. Practise until you can answer both questions without reading from a script, because the board is assessing motivation and communication rather than production quality.

How Realistic Are Your Chances?

Honestly: this is a competitive programme, and it is worth going in with clear eyes. Twenty-five places are available worldwide, and Erasmus Mundus programmes routinely draw applications from across every continent.

For context on Indian participation in Erasmus Mundus overall, the EU Delegation to India announced on 22 June 2026 that 75 Indian students had been awarded Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarships for the 2026 to 2028 cycle, describing India as the top recipient country since 2004 and among the top three for that intake. Earlier cycles saw higher numbers, with 146 Indian awardees announced for 2024 and 153 for the 2021 cohort. These figures cover all Erasmus Mundus programmes combined, not IMLEX specifically, and the consortium does not publish IMLEX application volumes.

What that means practically: Indian applicants are demonstrably successful in this scheme, but the numbers are not large and the trend across recent cycles has not been upward. Treat IMLEX as one strong application within a portfolio rather than a single plan, and apply to two or three Erasmus Mundus programmes in the same cycle if your background fits more than one.
